March in the DR

The middle two weeks of March, our team hosted around 50 students and staff from all over the United States. It was a really refreshing time for our team to interact with people from our same culture and to have the opportunity to share the Dominican culture here.

God did some really incredible things in the matter of two weeks. A few business professionals came with the team the first week, presenting on biblical values in the workplace and their personal testimonies about how God has touched their lives. The university of UTESA was able to host two small outreaches to their students. At the university of UCE, the Vida Estudiantil ministry hosted a free concert for their student population and more than a hundred students heard the Gospel. And at the university of UNPHU, over 20 students prayed to receive Jesus as their Savior and Lord!

One cool story moment from those two weeks was one Friday I spent at UTESA.

UTESA is not typically a university that I get to spend much time at. With about 4 student leaders and 15 students regularly attending the weekly meeting, the ministry is in the early stages of growth. Interestingly, over half of the students that are at school there are Haitian. And in case you didn't already know, my experience with the UTESA students has been that (1) they are incredibly friendly and (2) that they are incredibly musical.

But, on this particular Friday, we mixed things up a bit. The students leaders planned to have an "organization fair" of sorts, so we set-up a table, did a blitz invite of all the students on campus (it's a really tiny campus). and tried to turn conversation about Vida Estudiantil into conversations about the Gospel.

During the first few hours of the event, I met a student at UTESA, Lili. She was an older medicine student and had a few minutes before her exam that afternoon. We did Soularium together (an image based survey about God and spirituality). At the end of the survey, I explained to her about what it means to have a personal relationship with Jesus. Asking her if she had experienced that before, she responded no, but that she had been feeling something moving inside her recently to find out more about God!

It was unfortunately right at that moment that she had to leave for her exam. Writing down her name and contact info, I made a point to share our conversation with Ashlee, my teammate that is at UTESA regularly during the week.

Last week, Ashlee came back from UTESA and shared with me that she was able to meet with Lili, explain the Gospel and that Lili prayed to receive Jesus!!

It was such an encouraging moment to remember that as much as I want things to work out on my timeline, God's timing is not only better--it's perfect!

Please continue to pray with us for the students like Lili at the universities of UTESA, UASD, UNPHU and UCE!

xoxo,
